To educate, support and encourage my community on the maternal mortality rate in Black Women.

Our Purpose

The purpose of Sarah’s Joy, Inc is to educate myself and my community on the maternal mortality rate in Black Women.

According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias. Social determinants of health have historically prevented many people from racial and ethnic minority groups from having fair opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to educate, encourage, and support African American women during their pregnancy.

To promote healthy mom and baby both pre and postpartum.

To promote advocation for maternal health in our Black communities.

Our Story

My daughter Sarah Eloise Nelson became pregnant with her first child at the age of 32. That was a dream come true for her. But she was diagnosed with hypertension and pre-eclampsia early in her pregnancy. She took a leave of absence from her job; she ate nutritional meals and kept her stress level under control. She had some complications delivering her baby, but after Micah was born, we thought everything was going to be okay. She died one week after giving birth. The cause of death was peripartum cardiomyopathy.

What we didn’t realize was that her health conditions could be detrimental to her health from six weeks to up to a year after giving birth. In no way should she have been released from the hospital in a few days after having a c-section with her condition. I am learning that what happened to my daughter and other maternal Black mothers can be preventable.

Black maternal death and near death is in a crisis in America and we must work together to find solutions.
